How a trade actually fills
At any moment there are buyers bidding to buy and sellers asking to sell. The gap between the best bid and best ask is the spread. Here's the order book for a stock at ~$50:
A "market maker" is a firm that posts both a bid and an ask all day, earning the spread for providing that instant liquidity.
