The A+ Scalp Dashboard is allowed to be confident. The A+ Chop Filter exists to falsify it. It's the second member of the series and it has exactly one job: grade the quality of every cloud flip so genuine sideways noise can be told from a flip worth taking. It runs on the same premise as the whole family — for a quick options scalp a false PASS costs more than a missed trade — which means it will proudly block flips that would have worked, by design. This lesson teaches how it grades, and what to actually do on each verdict.
Most of a scalper's losses come from trading chop — a ranging, mean-reverting market — as if it were a trend. The chop filter is built to catch exactly that.
Gates first, then a score
The filter's central design lesson is that a blended score is dangerous — a strong component can carry a failing one. So the chop filter runs five hard gates first, and only consults the quality score if all five clear:
- Spacing — time since the last flip (a flip two bars after the last is whipsaw almost by definition).
- Expansion — is the cloud spread actually growing from the flip bar?
- Slope — the rate of change of the cloud.
- Efficiency — how directly price moved (path efficiency).
- Chop score — a 0–100 market-state score, self-calibrating so it means the same on any ticker or timeframe.
If any one gate fails, the flip is blocked — full stop. An efficiency of 22 can't be averaged away by an expansion of 90. This is the same "gates before a composite" discipline you saw in the SMC entry checklist, and it's there for the same reason: correlated strength hides a fatal weakness.
REJOIN vs REVERSAL: the harder claim needs a higher bar
Once the gates clear, the flip is classified against the slow cloud:
- REJOIN — the flip goes with the slow cloud (the fast cloud rejoining the trend). It's the easier claim, so it passes at a lower quality bar.
- REVERSAL — the flip goes against the slow cloud (a counter-trend turn). It's the harder claim, so it must clear a higher bar to pass.
That asymmetry is honest: a with-trend continuation deserves less proof than a counter-trend reversal, and the filter demands accordingly. Early in the session, before the slow cloud is warm, the label carries a trailing ~ to tell you it's approximate.
The five verdicts — and what to do
At the window close (a few bars after the flip, not at the flip itself), the filter stamps one verdict. Only two are things you act on; three are observations. Tap through each:
The two that matter are PASS (act on it, with the rest of your entry rules from Lesson 6) and BLOCK (skip it — a blocked trade you missed beats a false one you took). MATURED and READY are deliberately not signals; they answer different questions and exist to be compared against PASS, not obeyed. We'll see in Lesson 9 exactly why READY is an observation and not an edge — it's one of the most important honesty lessons in the whole series.
A couple of reading details: each mark carries a direction row (▲ green bull / ▼ pink bear, kept distinct from the verdict colours) and a confidence tier (A / B / C) that simply restates a number already on the pane — a confidently blocked flip is an A, a borderline one is a C. No new composite score is ever invented, which is a rule the series takes seriously.
How it fits your entry
The chop filter is the fourth check in the Lesson 6 chain: flip → structure shift → confirmed state → chop not blocking → enter. A PASS doesn't replace your structure and confirmation work; it adds a skeptic's second opinion on whether the flip happened in tradeable conditions at all. Used together, the dashboard proposes and the chop filter disposes — which is exactly the kind of adversarial check that separates a robust process from an overfit one.
